The Discovery Education Calendar provides digital resources to support events that have happened throughout history on a particular day. By using the calendar you can help students connect the past and present with resources tied to historical events.
You can find the calendar on your My DE Homepage, in the right side column, just below Global News.
Each day the calendar shows events that have happened on that day, organized under the core subject areas- Language Arts, Social Studies, Arts & Humanities, Biography, Health & Guidance, Mathematics and Science. Click on the “On This Day” title or any of the images to be taken to the calendar page.
Browse the events by clicking through the subject titles. For May 11th, under Art & Humanities you’ll see ‘1988: Degas’s Little Dancer of Fourteen Years sold‘. You’ll learn that Edgar Degas’s only sculpture to be exhibited in his lifetime, ‘Little Dancer of Fourteen Years’ was sold in 1988. By clicking on the title for the event you’ll access media resources to learn more about it.
By searching Discovery Education for “Degas” you’ll find additional resources to explore including images and encyclopedia articles.
These calendar events can be used in your classroom in a number of ways. They are a great way to start your day- exploring what historical events have occurred on this day. You might also ask students to explore the calendar on their own- They find their birth day and select an event that occurred on that day to learn more about. Using Board Builder students can link additional resources from th
e event along with their own writing and additional facts about the day.
